BP Ventures and Freedom Development Foundation Launch Crypto Wallet Upgrade with Gift Cards and Mobile Top-Ups for Financial Access in Africa
LONDON, March 31, 2025 – BP Ventures LLC, in partnership with the Freedom Development Foundation (FDF), is rolling out a major upgrade to its Stellar-based self-custodial digital wallet, aiming to bring easier access to everyday essentials for users in The Gambia and Tanzania. The update integrates gift card and mobile top-up services through a collaboration with Zendit.io, a part of IDT Corporation (NYSE: IDT).
The enhanced digital wallet, designed to be user-friendly, now allows individuals to use USDC, a stable cryptocurrency, on the Stellar blockchain to purchase hundreds of different gift cards from various merchants across numerous countries. In addition to gift cards, users can now easily top up their mobile phones directly through the wallet.
We’re focused on making cryptocurrency useful in daily life. This upgrade empowers users to use digital assets for real-world essentials—like buying groceries or adding credit to their phones.” Anthony Barker, co-founder of BP Ventures.
Bridging the Gap in Africa
The Freedom Development Foundation (FDF) is a UK-based charity supporting communities in The Gambia and Tanzania. They are using the self-custodial wallet solution provided by BP Ventures to further its mission. By integrating gift cards and mobile top-ups, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between traditional financial systems and the burgeoning digital economy in Africa.
The partnership with zendit.io leverages their expertise in digital services to provide a seamless experience for users. The integration aligns with the increasing trend of mobile money adoption in Africa, where, in 2023, 237 million active accounts processed transactions worth $919 billion.
“We believe that by integrating gift cards and mobile top-ups with Stellar-based cryptocurrency transactions, we’re creating a link between traditional and digital finance that is particularly relevant in Africa,”
explained Barker. He noted that in countries like Kenya and Nigeria, mobile payments are rapidly gaining popularity, with a significant portion of internet users regularly using their mobile phones for transactions.
This initiative by BP Ventures and the Freedom Foundation represents a practical step toward expanding financial inclusion and providing valuable resources to communities in need.
